The Inevitable First Impressions

Religulous...

Unlike the second coming of Christ, you should have known this was coming (too funny, I know), sooner rather than later. I just returned home from seeing the film Religulous. And just as sure you should have been that this was coming you should have been sure I’d have enjoyed myself.

Now the first thing that tested my patience isn’t so much a gripe with the film, per se. I was more an issue with venue itself. Why is the wheelchair “seating” at these obnoxious multi-plex “stadium seating” theatres right up front? I have a screaming headache from my eyes being bombarded with having to look, nearly, straight up at the screen! And it didn’t help that this movie was shown in one of the smaller, back hallway, theatres in the joint. Which, unfortunately, shortens the proximity of the screen to me.

Dig these fucking theatres into the ground some, so those of us who don’t or refuse to use stairs, come into these theatres at the mid-way point. Rather than right up front. I can’t and won’t speak for other blokes who find sitting so close to the screen, while the rest of the theatre is virtually empty, so objectionable. But my ability to see isn’t impaired! At least it wasn’t before the movie. Shit…

Wolf Creek

Wolf Creek DVD CoverI have no idea why I fought Jared so hard when refusing too see Wolf Creek. Or why I held out for so long. But, in my defense, you have to understand, Jared is a pervert. Therefore anything he recommends warrants well founded reasons for hesitancy. And this movie was hardly the exception.

That said I’ve seen it many times since my original viewing, and following each time I watch it, I manage to grow ever more impressed with everything the film sets out to accomplish. From a “nuts and bolts” approach to telling a story, and a horror story in particular, it’s brilliant. I’ll refer to a previous post, Pace Yourself, where I commented on a single, yet very simple, story telling element that seems to elude the modern movie making industry. And, fortunately, Wolf Creek wasn’t a movie that fell victim to that all-too-familiar “pace” trap.

I’m all too happy to report, it takes it’s time getting to where it needs to go and when it gets there, watch out…

Interesting Times Are ‘Underfoot’

In the past couple of days, quite possibly yesterday, Michael Moore released his latest film, Slackers United, for free on the internet. And I parked myself in front of my computer and watched it last evening. I have to give the man props for this gesture. Thank you kindly, Mike.

And I was left a number of strong impressions. A few good, mostly bad…

Pace Yourself

Lanté came bearing gifts. Thank you, Lanté.

Previous we’ve had some discussions about movies. Rather obviously our tastes in movies differ, like any two people, but Friday he brought me one of his favorites. Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator. In an attempt to prove a point, I assume.

Now I’m not going to hide behind my distaste for movies with any hint of testosterone jacked rogue military special “op” teams hell bent on killing non-American’s, or Arnold’s acting, for that matter. But both his acting and the movie, “on the whole,” weren’t too bad. I was very surprised.

Sure this film, like any, has it’s flaws. Big one’s too. But on other levels it’s quite a successful endeavor. With respect to the state of movies today, especially…
