Just Read The Damn Book

Book JacketNearing the end of July I saw the movie The Diving Bell And The Butterfly and subsequently wrote a piece entitled Let Your Imagination Set You Free. Since then I’ve had an opportunity to read the book, by the same name, which set this all adrift. Not to mention my interest in what he so valiantly accomplished. The authoring of some memoirs.

I seem to recall hearing a few professionals, at a rehabilitation hospital I was admitted to in March of ’97, recommend my family read a book written by a bloke who suffered from an affliction painstakingly “similar” to mine. The “affliction” being, as I’ve mentioned previously, “Locked-in Syndrome.” And “the bloke” being, I assume, Jean-Dominique Bauby. As it turns out Bauby’s book was originally published the very same week I finally began my climb out of my body. Weird.

Anyway this is a quick read. One I suggest people read in “collaboration” with the movie. The nature of both medium’s provide an important context into each other. I guess having “lived it” provides me a perspective I felt the book didn’t provide. No cut on him. And seeing it on screen I was better able to grasp what he experienced. The movie allows a person to witness difficulties he faced, the most prevalent being writing. Whereas the book, just as relevantly, tells that same person what he thought and felt.

It’s really a great story. Take my word for it…

No Need To Repeat

Today’s post has, at least in part been incited by the Vegan Freaks…

I’ve been writing on a pretty regular basis for a year and a half. And don’t necessarily mean for this blog, per se, but generally. And in that time I’ll find myself writing an email to someone about something, when I stumble on an idea I’d possibly like to explore at a little bit later. So in a folder it goes for another time. To my amazement I’ve collected quite a mess of incoherent, half thought out groups of words…

And just yesterday I was rooting around in said folder, looking for something to expand on. When I read a piece I wrote, about a year ago? It was regarding “animal activism.” And, essentially how it can be a noble endeavor and desperately needs to be fought. But not by me. “It’s just not my deal.” Or so I thought… Continue reading No Need To Repeat

Off The Hook?

Here I sit a good 10 days following the initial national Maple Leaf Listeriosis tainted meat scandal, a situation that continues to grow more serious with each passing day. In terms of an ever mounting tainted product list. So today I’m faced with a seemingly connected string of concerns.

First my Grandfather. Yes still. I’ve yet to hear why he fell so ill and, as of Wednesday, when I last saw him, was still not feeling right. He’s back at “home,” sure, which should be a good thing, but he’s still feeling the effects of whatever made him sick in the first place… Continue reading Off The Hook?

I Wonder

It was Canada Day 2008. Just a very short 26 days ago. While normally an absurd reason to “employ” moronic traditions signifying the founding of a “nation state,” I chose, instead to celebrate a friends birthday with a load of other people…

We were outside in a different friends backyard until well after nightfall when I realized I hadn’t been bitten by a mosquito. Strange. I’d even been warned by the home owner, more than once that her backyard was notorious for the little critters. But no deal. Continue reading I Wonder
