What With Mother’s Day Approaching

I spent the first hour of this Monday morning catching up with some of my most frequented places on the internets. But before I get involved with an absurdly technical issue, like how to get WordPress to display custom page titles from scratch, say, I thought I’d do some “light reading” elsewhere on the web.

When I came across an article, A Cow’s Milk is Not Yours To Take, that is much too powerful, and relevant, what with Mother’s Day approaching, and all, not to share;

“Everything done to a dairy cow is a stripping away of her essence. Her choice in a mate is denied, she is artificially inseminated. Her choice of when to mate is taken from her, she is “synched” to breed with the other cows in the herd. Nearly every single dairy calf is removed from his or her mother the day they are born. She is even denied motherhood. We must add insult to injury by taking control over her milk source, her udder. She is milked on our schedule and bred to produce the amount and type of milk we like. Then, in a cruel twist, we take her milk and use it for ourselves and our children. Milk that nurtures the growth of a frolicksome calf, milk that is given and received on a natural cycle of hunger and satiation, milk that is bovine, not human…”

I recommend reading it…

‘Use Is Abuse’

Karol Orzechowski of Animal Voices just posted an extremely valuable short film, via Vimeo, titled Field Trip. It’s a relatively benign — and don’t let my characterization mislead you, I think it’s very powerful, too — look into The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, specifically, and the animal user industry, as a whole, in general.

I’m not sure what you’ll get out of it, its effect is wholly dependant on your interpretation, but I was left saddened. For the animals, obviously, but the children, as well. They have no idea they’re being misled, not to mention, severely indoctrinated, through a first hand look into some horribly problematic practices, sure, but the information they’re receiving isn’t exactly the entire truth.

Mary Martin said it all;

“… [T]here are no graphic images of suffering similar to those in, say, Earthlings. However, for me, the images are in a way just as powerful because they demonstrate that use is abuse…” ((via her blog post @Animal Person))

And, just to “reiterate” something else Mary said — in that same post — “The site for the film is here, and [it] includes thought-provoking photos, as well…”

Veganism In The Mainstream?

On Saturday, Gary Steiner, had a piece published in The New York Times, titled Animal, Vegetable, Miserable. It’s a pretty decent article. Especially considering the forum. And so worthy of your attention. Especially that of American’s, given the time of year;

“Think about that when you’re picking out your free-range turkey, which has absolutely nothing to be thankful for on Thanksgiving. All it ever had was a short and miserable life, thanks to us intelligent, compassionate humans…”
