Mark this Day and these Words

In what is a very surprizing turn of events, I can’t say I can find much to argue, concerning comments Stephen Harper made yesterday on his trip to the Arctic;

“No reason the seal industry should be singled out…”1

With the vast majority of Canada, and the world, still treating animals as a commodity, it doesn’t make much sense to “single-out” and demonize a certain demographic — especially one such as the Inuit for carrying on a tradition and a way of life that has sustained their people for thousands of years — when we’re all complicit in similar, if not worse, atrocities. Non-human and human alike.

Now I’m not saying I disagree with the EU’s ban on seal products, in fact I applaud them for implementing a decision as a result of public pressure. And it’s so refreshing to see an organized body outright ban anything rather than call for reform — which doesn’t really change the underpinnings of domination and hierarchy, not to mention the actual “welfare” of the non-human animals we subject to our sociopathic perversions, when eventually put into effect. I’m merely saying he has a point.

Mark this day and these words, Stephen Harper is right. Go vegan. Stop supporting all animal exploitation, not just a form, every form…

The True Cost of Taste

Slaughterhouse Book JacketWhat a week this is turning into. It started off with what I stated, in my previous post. My watching of the documentary, Earthlings. For which I needed to download the transcript, after the fact. It’s bloody near impossible to actually absorb the narration, while having to watch what it was that I witnessed last Saturday.

But next, hoping not to be “outdone” (if such a statement applies), I started to read the book, Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment Inside the U.S. Meat Industry, by Gail A. Eisnitz. And, it would appear, it is going to seriously trump all contenders.

Please keep in mind: these are merely my preliminary impressions. Like I said I started it only a couple of days prior to today, but horror of the book is almost immediately “prevalent.” And my feelings right at this very minute are, while being barely 100 pages in (the type is rather large), to comment already…

I (Finally) Saw Earthlings

Earthlings Banner...

I’ve had the documentary, Earthlings, for, near as I can figure, probably a year? And there it “waited” on a makeshift shelf, unopened, since it’s arrival? I know, I suck.

That was, until yesterday, when I, finally, opened, sat, and watched with, what I could well feel was, a look of pure disdain upon my face. If for nothing else than the many ways we humans use non-human animals for nothing more than terribly unnecessary and completely selfish ends.

What could I ever possibly add towards a productive and meaningful “conversation” concerning what I was shown by said film? Absolutely nothing. That’s what…

Details Are Scarce

I recently had a friend ask me about my veganism. Which was great! The more I’m asked, the more chances I have to get the word out, right?

Anyway I’m always very careful about how I approach people’s curiosity when I’m asked about my life’s choices. Mostly because I’m not too sure how receptive they will be to viewpoints I have regarding certain decisions I’ve made. My position on animal rights being the most glaring example. However I feel compelled to make it known, immediately, the choices I’ve made regarding being a vegan derive, at least initially, from an animal rights stance. After that. It’s a free-for-all. I’ll see where we end up.

You see I’m of the mind it’s always best to ease yourself into these conversations prior to laying out any opinions. Don’t come on too strong. Let them lead. And judge their reception by the questions they ask. Face it, people aren’t always receptive to the truth, even if they ask for it. Especially when it comes to their food choices.

In my experience, people are much more content to swallow the “blue pill” and ignore what’s really going on. But, as it turns out, if you keep at it, your words will be heard, eventually…
