Potty Parity

Today marks World Toilet Day! And as odd as “we,” people living in the developed world, might find the need to mark a day as such, facts are not everyone is blessed with certain luxuries. Luxuries we take for granted. Sanitation being just one of many. But what’s worse is, and I have experience with this particular aspect, its affect on women.

The Current today, in part 3, Potty Parity, they dealt with this issue in quite a few interesting ways. Breaking it down — while citing some very compelling facts — in some interesting ways. One of which, as I said, I have experience with. I pee sitting down, and have to perform a certain process to take care of business, and have absolutely no choice but to.

I know, or could guess closer than any other member of my gender (a male) who isn’t in a similar situation as me, what is at stake for women. And most importantly what having access to washroom facilities truly means to a person who needs to go. Now I’m not saying I have a complete understanding of everything a woman, in this case, faces in this particular circumstance. I’m just saying there is much more to any one experience than what any one person knows and could imagine to be true.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, things are much different — in ways you can imagine, sure, but it’s the stuff you didn’t consider that really makes you appreciate what certain things truly mean for an individual who isn’t you — on the other side.

But I can’t imagine what life would be like without any access to sanitation. Please do yourself a favour and familiarize yourself with the issue. I will…

F.O.D

Friday night Travis Barker, drummer of a few bands but “most famously” that of Blink 182, was involved in what I can guess was a rather serious plane crash. And at this time, well as of this morning at least, was still in critical yet stable condition.

Why do I care? Never much liking the bands he’s ever played/plays with. But he’s an individual much like any of us, who, I’ll assume, is in a great deal of pain. So en route to another point, I want to wish him all the best. He’ll need it.

Last week a friend and I were discussing musical influences on our lives. Which at first seemed like a very natural thing for me to explore. But it soon started to feel “odd.” In a sense that I, a person who grew quite used to expressing himself musically, hasn’t touched an “axe” that sits in the loneliest corner of his bedroom in a good 10 years? Then I was ever so casually reminded I look upon it each and every single day for whatever reason. And, I think, that fact alone speaks volumes about the music I listen to being such an important part of my life. And I don’t ever see that changing. Or I can’t imagine it being any different.

Paging Dr. Gupta

Last week Elizabeth Cohen, on CNN’s American Morning spoke about a newly released study comparing the effectiveness of three different diets–a low fat diet, the Mediterranean diet and a low-carb diet–and with results in hand, quite surprisingly gawked at the findings. I’m sure if she went further into specifics of said study, it would tell quite a different story. But I digress…

The study followed a bunch of people over a course of a two year period and tracked their weight-loss. I’m not sure about any specifics of the study, I’m too lazy and I don’t really care to cite it. But I have to mention this study was conducted by a group with a stake in the findings. And, rather shockingly the findings favored this group.

Not my point… Continue reading Paging Dr. Gupta
