Yesterday Democracy Now spent the hour talking about reproductive rights and “the killing of the abortion provider Dr. George Tiller.” Interesting stuff.

I’m more than willing to admit, the debate has its merits. Frankly I understand both sides of the argument. As a vegan, I understand the stance against abortion. But I also understand and support the need for such a service’s existence. Agree with it or not, quite simply, it’s a woman’s health issue. But, much more pressing is, it’s also a woman’s right to do whatever she chooses with her body. Period.

Now, I’ve heard it before, how could I, an animal rights advocate, even think about arguing for abortion?

That Didn’t Take Long

In my previous post, Shocked By The Stupidity, I mentioned I was, wait for it, shocked. And upon posting it I went searching through my feeds — for something to do, sure, but sincerely hoping not to be outdone — when, to my astonishing surprise, I was. Even more so.

Jeremy Scahill, over at Rebel Reports, wrote a rather disturbing and unrelenting — in terms of the imagery I’m left with after reading his words — piece, “Mr. Obama, Rape of Prisoners is ‘Not Particularly Sensational?’” Sadly the title hardly prepared me for what laid within;

“At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee…”

Granted, the above quote wasn’t taken from Jeremy’s piece, in the sense that he wrote it, rather it was taken from a story from the Daily Telegraph of London. But both are worthy of your attention.

What the fuck is wrong with humanity?

Shocked By The Stupidity

I, finally, had the opportunity to see the documentary Jesus Camp last night;

“Jesus Camp follows a group of young children to Pastor Becky Fischer’s ‘Kids on Fire Summer Camp,’ where kids are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in God’s army and are schooled in how to take back America for Christ. The film is a first-ever look into an intense training ground that recruits born-again Christian children to become an active part of America’s political future…”

Honestly, I must admit, the whole premise struck me as rather humourous, at first. Before my watching it, of course. But now, that it’s the morning after, I’ve serious issues with what I saw. And it’s no longer funny…
